[fortunately Mikleo doesn't need much handling; he's half-hiding himself behind Sorey's shoulder, kind of embarrassed at ALL THIS EMOTION, though he also ducks his head in a visible nod. feelings! how do you deal with them.]

It shouldn't be too hard.

[Honestly it's Dirk here who needs the handling of How To People. He feels like Sorey is better equipped to do this for Mikleo, so he is considering a smooth exit stage left.]

Cool. I'll leave you two to... [Hm no.] ..Do whatever. Let me know.

And have fun with the cameras.

[Okay not that smooth.]

Sorey--!

[he sounds more surprised than mad, because you know what? Holy shit. Holy shit, Dirk is using science to make their dreams come true. This should absolutely be commemorated in a suitable way.

He holds up the new camera to take the friendship selfie with. It's not very ironic, but it is full of feelings.]

[SURPRISE. IT'S A SURPRISE SELFIE! Dirk... is wearing his shades so the surprise isn't even visible but THE SELFIE SUPER HAPPENS HERE.]

I'm glad you two are really taking to selfie culture.

[He genuinely is? They are good people.]

Of course it would be! If cameras are popular in more scienticially advanced worlds, then it makes sense they'd be used as a form of personal and social documentation. They're much faster and easier to use than anything we're used to, aren't they?

[Dirk nods because THIS IS IN FACT HIS JAM.] Selfies were extensively used in the early 21st century through media-sharing mediums similar to our communications network. Humans found ways to express themselves and their relations to others by choices in the images they shared.

But then if a photo doesn't contain yourself directly, is it still a selfie? Or is 'selfie' more of an umbrella term referring to photos taken for personal and social consumption rather than public purposes?

A photograph that doesn't contain a picture of yourself isn't a selfie. Technically speaking, a selfie has to be done while holding the camera you're using. You can use a reflective surface, but if you're not holding the camera, it isn't the technical selfie. Moving into the general structure of Instagram, which was a program that enabled users to share selfies and other pictures with one another and the most popular platform for it in its time, there's an entire separate class for images of what you're eating, varying from 'foodporn' to 'nom.' Then there are 'ootd' pics, or Outfit of the Day pictures. They're generally a class of selfie. TBT is the initialism for "Throw Back Thursday," a day when users share old photographs of themselves. Petsagram is for pet pictures.

All of these are in the form of 'hashtags,' which is a form of metadata placed on content that allows users to search across multiple users. Tagging was broadly used across multiple platforms.

Learning by doing...? If you grew up with the technology and platforms already in place at least that seems a little more intuitive...though I would hope guides existed as well for less savvy users.

The entire system creates clear divides between those who know and those who don't. It's possible to learn, but in some ways it was designed to foster a sense of community by creating that secondary code.

I guess I'm not quite getting it. How does it foster a sense of community by creating such clear divides?

It happens in practice. Generally, it's the sense of community that is built by dividing those 'in the know' from those out of it. If you know what TBT stands for you have that sense of belonging to the community that uses the term, while those who don't understand it are outside the community. The insider's perspective can only be defined by delineating an outside.

I suppose it makes sense. Your involvement in the community is proportionate to how much effort you commit to putting in, both in learning the technology and the platforms and terminology, and taking the selfies themselves. It's a neat enough system and not an uncommon paradigm, just harder for us to picture since it's technologically-based.
