My birthday? I'm not sure how it translates into Earth's calendar, but...

How about you? When's your birthday?

Oh, um, it's January 6th, so it won't be for a while yet.

[ But... it's autumn right now. ]

I don't know how your calendar system works, but it sounds like your birthday is soon?

Oh...you're right! Maybe it already passed. We really have been here for a while. I keep forgetting.

[he clearly wasn't paying attention to matching up his calendar with the one they're using.]

[ Hotaru looks alarmed. Passed already? Sorey, your birthday is important!!! ]

What? Happy birthday!? Happy belated birthday? Oh, no, I should've made something more.

[He comes across them both in the labs. He has nothing in his hands, yet he fixes them with a piercing (??? emotionless) expression.]

Sorey. Mikleo.

It's done. The Goggleos have landed.

[he doesn't recognize the expression, so it takes an extra half a second before his eyes LIGHT UP like Christmas has come early]

—They're done?! You did it? That was so fast!

It's okay! I don't need anything, really. I just like being able to spend time with everyone. That's more than enough as far as a birthday goes.

[He drops the two prototype goggles out of his deck. Yes, Sorey and Mikleo don't need them. He still made them in Sorey and Mikleo's respective colours, with GOGGLEOS all sleek on the side like a sports logo. Because Dirk's a nerd.]

These are the prototypes. I've installed it onto the rest of the equipment on a toggle on status, so you'll have to ask people to turn it on. It's just to ensure the equipment still works as goggles if the video equipment falters.

[hovers at Sorey's shoulder a little, reaching out -- hesitating, like he's not sure what he's seeing is real -- and then touching the side of one...]

[ Hotaru can support that sentiment. It's what she would say herself in this situation, but... she feels like it's not enough. ]

[ Her voice is soft, shy. That's still not enough, but it's all she has at that moment. ]

[picking up his pair and trying them on, testing the toggle to see how it works. he doesn't need them, but he'd like to be able to show other people how to use them if needed.]

I think it's a nickname, right?

[looking at Dirk for confirmation. Who knows, maybe Jesus is just Sorey in a different Earth language??? Same number of letters.]

Yeah. Based on an important cultural figure in Earth history.

Was he like a Shepherd? Do they have Shepherds on earth too?!

[She's SO CUTE that he's gonna pick her up and spin her around. Just once, before giving her an extra hug and then letting go.]

I don't know how I'm going to pay you back when you keep giving me all of these presents.

. . . wow. I don't think it got quite that literal at home, but it's good to know about these odd parallels.

[ She yelps a little in surprise, then laughs. Her smile is wide when he sets her down. ]

I think Edna would hit me if I started referring to everyone as "my flock". But it could have had a more literal connotation hundreds of years ago. Things change with time, right? I think we would have heard about it if Earth still had a Shepherd.
